About
Our Tours
All tours are led by Michelle or
James Nevius and feature a mix of stops that highlight the history,
architecture, and cultural development of the neighborhood. We are both
historians who believe that the best way to experience New York City is up close and on foot.

“Just a note to say that our Lower East
Side tour with you was one of the highlights of our trip to New York. The personalized service, along
with your comprehensive knowledge and great sense of humor, made for a
wonderful afternoon. We would like to thank you for adjusting the pace of the
tour to us, and stopping when we needed to. When I am making recommendations
for friends and family who will be visiting NYC, your most excellent service
will be literally at the top of the list. Thanks again for everything.”
Jim T., San
Diego, CA
“I'm a New Yorker, which means I never
leave my neighborhood except at gunpoint. So I'm not embarrassed to say that
I know almost nothing about life downtown. Now that's changed, thanks to
Michelle Nevius's walking tour of Lower Manhattan.
Michelle's knowledge of history is impressively thorough, and I now know more
about the Museum of the American Indian building than any non-architecture
major has a right to know. Yet she did not rigidly and robotically lead the
tour: She also let us lead her into
places she might not have gone, just because it seemed interesting to us at
the moment. She also charmed her way past two security guards, who let us in
to semi-private areas. She told tales of fire, war, suicide bombings, and the
British overthrow of the Dutch West India company. Who knew Wall
Street could be this much fun?”
Carol P., New
York, NY
“Michelle and James—Thank you for a perfect
walking tour through Central Park and ‘The
Gates.’ We can’t think of even one way that we would have improved the two
hour tour—it was just perfect. You are so well informed, have such
interesting facts and stories (including that priceless notebook full of
photos and illustrations), and are so genuinely enthused about telling the
story of Central Park that we can’t imagine two better guides. We all
appreciated the way you correlated ‘The Gates’ by Christo and Jeanne-Claude
with the historical importance of the gates of the park. Unexpected and
perfect…. And we found James’ letter in the Washington
Post: we totally agree with him. And we were proud to know him. We’ve
put your tours on our list of things we must do when we take a weekend in
NYC…. You made a good trip great, and we are grateful.”
Ray T., Silver
Spring, MD
"Michelle—on behalf of my brother and
myself, I would like to thank you for the tour of downtown Manhattan. We didn't realize how much this
part of the world is/was brimming with culture, history and humanity. I would
(and will) definitely recommend that any first-time visitors spend the first
day on your tour as a prerequisite; once again thanks for your knowledgeable
guide, and providing us with the opportunity to step back in time."
Sunny P., London, UK
“Michelle, I wanted to drop you a note to
thank both you and James for making our trip to New York City wonderful! Working with you
to for recommendations and to book the tours was fast and easy. Not to
mention how flexible you were to meet our schedule. It's amazing how much you
can arrange via a few e-mails. James was incredibly knowledgeable and a
fabulous tour guide! We had a tough customer in our group who simply loves
walking tours, and even he thought the three tours we had were some of the
best he had ever been on!”
Tina, Tampa
Bay, FL
“As part of a week-long family vacation to New York City, my wife
and I scheduled three tours with James Nevius for our family, which includes
three teenagers. With all there is to see and do in one of the greatest
cities of the world, some of our fondest memories relate to the walking tours
with James. The tours were highly informative, educational, engaging and,
simply, interesting. James knew his facts. He was engaging and unpretentious.
Next to one of the Zagat restaurant recommendations in Chinatown,
this was the best value of our trip, and certainly among the most educational
aspects of our visit. These tours are a wonderful value!”
Mike P., Fairbanks, AK
“What a terrific experience. Looking forward
to touring again soon.”
Davien L., New
York City
"The price was reasonable and the
experience was well-worth the money. In advance of the tour (which I found
and booked online), the guide indicated he would include any of my ancestor's
addresses that might still be original to the period he lived on the L.E.S. I
provided these to him in advance of my trip.
”The tour that my guide set up for me was indeed wonderful. He came with a
binder, full of old maps & photos, so we could compare the reality of
decaying buildings still in existence. He included places of worship and
businesses, providing historical information about each, as well information
about the architecture, streets, modes of transportation and immigrant way of
life. Truly, I felt transported to another time…and all this while people of Manhattan representing
different ethnic branches walked around us. Mind-boggling and an amazing
experience. I will definitely take the tour again…it went too fast!"
Nancy P., South Florida
“We had a great time with you—despite the
cold. I've been passing along the info about your tours. A great way to
entertain out-of-towners."
Sheila A., New York City
"We thoroughly enjoyed the walking
tour we took with you of Greenwich Village
last weekend. You are a great ambassador for New York City and I hope they appreciate what
a gem they have in you. I look forward to joining you again for another one
of your walking tours. It was time well spent."
Sandy L.
"Thanks so much for the very
informative, indeed intriguing, introduction to the historical and
architectural gems in Lower Manhattan. The
thoroughness of your presentation, including your much-appreciated use of
historical prints and photos to punctuate your talk and give it a sense of
immediacy, made this experience very much a cut above the ordinary. We also
appreciated the unhurried pace, your friendly and relaxed demeanor, and the
great flexibility you showed in arranging so comprehensive a tour with the
regrettably short notice and also the limited time we had for the excursion.
We feel we got a lot out of only two hours' time to cover over 300 years of
history, and we enjoyed ourselves in the process, never feeling harried or
pressed for time."
Carol D., Vermont
"I just wanted to follow up and say
that your walking tour with my aunts and myself of the Lower
East Side was marvelous! We sing your praises, and have
forwarded your name to our relatives who do business in NYC. You were a trip
highlight!"
Patty Z., Ithaca, NY
"We really
enjoyed [our Central Park tour] and just
wanted to say thank you! James did a great job and we saw lots of the park we
had never seen before. The history was very interesting, too. Thank you! We
will defiantly look for you again next time we go to NYC…and recommend you to
others.”
