About Our Tours

All tours are led by Michelle or James Nevius and feature a mix of stops that highlight the history, architecture, and cultural development of the neighborhood. We are both historians who believe that the best way to experience New York City is up close and on foot.

The Best of

Central Park

image005At 843 acres, Central Park is New York City's largest architectural work as well as being America's most famous landscaped park. Our tour examines the impetus behind the creation of the park and the implementation of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux's unique "Greensward" plan. Stops along the way reveal where their plan has been preserved along with the subsequent additions and revisions that give the park its ever-changing character. Planned stops on the tour include:*

  • The monument to Christopher Columbus in Columbus Circle
  • The monument to the USS Maine
  • Tavern on the Green
  • The finish line of the New York City marathon
  • Sheep Meadow
  • The Dairy
  • The Mall
  • Balto
  • Bethesda Terrace
  • The Lake
  • The Conservatory Water
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • The Obelisk ("Cleopatra's Needle")
  • The Great Lawn
  • Belvedere Castle
  • The Ramble
  • Bow Bridge
  • Strawberry Fields
  • In addition, the tour is supplemented with historic 19th-century drawings and photographs that illustrate the development of the park over the last 150 years.
