About Our Tours

All tours are led by Michelle or James Nevius and feature a mix of stops that highlight the history, architecture, and cultural development of the neighborhood. We are both historians who believe that the best way to experience New York City is up close and on foot.

Peter Stuyvesant’s Bowery:

The East Village, Gramercy Park, and Stuyvesant Square

image003When New York was still New Amsterdam and everything north of Chambers Street was the countryside, Peter Stuyvesant owned a large farm that ranged from Houston Street to 23rd Street east of the Bowery. This tour explore the disparate neighborhoods that farmland has become today: The East Village, Gramercy Park, Stuyvesant Square—and parts of NoHo and Union Square, too. Planned stops include:*

  • Union Square
  • Ladies’ Mile shopping district
  • Grace Episcopal Church
  • Astor Place
  • The Cooper Union
  • St. Marks-in-the-Bowery (including Peter Stuyvesant’s grave)
  • Second Avenue (“The Jewish Rialto”)
  • Stuyvesant Square
  • The original townhouses of Gramercy Park
  • One of the city’s first cooperative apartment buildings
  • The National Arts Club
  • The Players Club
  • The Gramercy Park Hotel
  • The Brotherhood Synagogue
  • Irving Place
  • The “Block Beautiful” of 19th Street
  • Pete’s Tavern
  • St. George’s Church
  • Friends Meeting House
  • In addition, the tour is supplemented with historic photographs and drawings showing the neighborhood through the years.

* all walking tour itineraries are subject to change

“Add an Hour”
For an additional $10 per person (or a flat fee of $120 for groups of 1-3 people), you can add an hour to the length of your tour and spend some time exploring one of the neighborhoods that borders Gramercy Park and the East Village, such as Greenwich Village or SoHo and NoLita.
