About Our Tours

All tours are led by Michelle or James Nevius and feature a mix of stops that highlight the history, architecture, and cultural development of the neighborhood. We are both historians who believe that the best way to experience New York City is up close and on foot.

Our Books

Nevius_Inside the Apple_FINAL.jpgOn March 24, 2009, Free Press (an imprint of Simon & Schuster) will release our newest book, Inside the Apple: A Streetwise History of New York City. This compact history traces the narrative of New York from the arrival of Henry Hudson 400 years ago to the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site that is going on today. Broken down into 182 “bite-sized” chapters, the book can read cover to cover, but is also designed so that you can use it as a handy reference or a walking tour guide.

At the back of the book, 14 self-guided walking tours allow readers to take the book’s stories and string them together for their own explorations of the city.

The book is available for pre-order from Amazon and other online merchants.

For much more information about the book, including information about public appearances, links for ordering the book online, and our New York City history blog, go to www.insidetheapple.net.

Frommer Cover_002.JPGIn March 2008, our first guidebook, Frommer’s 24 Great Walks in New York was released. It features compact itineraries of everything from the Financial District to Harlem in an easy-to-follow format with excellent maps.

Tours include:

  • Colonial Lower Manhattan
  • “In the Shadow of the Towers” – including the World Trade Center site and its environs
  • Modern Midtown, which looks at skyscraper development
  • Artists’ Upper West Side
  • two tours of Central Park
  • …and many, many more.

You can purchase it from Amazon as well as other online merchants. Most NYC bookstore carry it, as well, and your local bookstore might have it, too. (It’s always worth asking.)

historymysteryFor our visitors from the UK and Europe, it has been published under its original title, History and Mystery New York (AA Publishing) and is available from Amazon.co.uk.
