About Our Tours

All tours are led by Michelle or James Nevius and feature a mix of stops that highlight the history, architecture, and cultural development of the neighborhood. We are both historians who believe that the best way to experience New York City is up close and on foot.

The Best of

Greenwich Village

image003Greenwich Village has long been known for its tolerant and bohemian attitudes. Not only has it been home to scores of famous artists and writers, it also contains some of the city's most important domestic architecture.

This tour focuses on historic Greenwich Village from its founding in the 17th century through its role as a posh suburb in the 19th century to its eventual fame in the 20th century as America’s “Left Bank.”

Planned stops include:*

  • Washington Square Park [based on current construction, we will see as much of the park as possible]
  • Judson Memorial Church
  • The Row (including the former home of Edith Wharton)
  • New York University
  • Washington Mews
  • The Lockwood deForest house
  • Church of the Ascension
  • West 10th Street's row of artists' studios and writers' homes
  • Jefferson Marketplace Courthouse
  • Gay Street
  • The Northern Dispensary
  • Sheridan Square, Christopher Park and the Stonewall Inn
  • Grove Court
  • The Church of St. Luke in the Fields
  • The Cherry Lane Theatre
  • Chumley's
  • Edna St. Vincent Millay's narrow home
  • St. Luke's Place
  • Italian section of Bleecker Street
  • Sites associated with Bob Dylan and the folk scene  (If you are particularly interested in Dylan, let us know in advance, as it will help determine the tour’s route.)
  • In addition, the tour is supplemented with historical drawings and photographs that illustrate the how much Greenwich Village has—and has not—changed in the last 200 years.

* all walking tour itineraries are subject to change

“Add an Hour”
For an additional $10 per person (or a flat fee of $120 for groups of 1-3 people), you can add an hour to the length of your tour and spend some time exploring one of the neighborhoods that borders the Village, such as The East Village or SoHo and NoLita.
