About Our Tours

All tours are led by Michelle or James Nevius and feature a mix of stops that highlight the history, architecture, and cultural development of the neighborhood. We are both historians who believe that the best way to experience New York City is up close and on foot.

The Architecture of
Harlem and Hamilton Heights

image004Originally a Dutch farming community—miles from New York’s population center—Harlem grew into an architecturally rich community at the turn of the 20th century with the coming of the subway. This tour begins at the top of Hamilton Heights and wends its way to the Harlem plain, examining along the route country estates, tenements, middle-class townhouses, collegiate buildings, and a tremendous variety of church design. Architects whose work we see include Stanford White, George B. Post, Vertner Tandy (America’s first accredited black architect), William Renwick, John McComb, Jr., R.H. Robertson, Bruce Price, Charles W. Bolton, George W. Foster, and Charles McKim.

Planned stops on this tour include:*

  • The Hamilton Heights historic district
  • Hamilton Grange (Alexander Hamilton’s 1802 home)
  • City College
  • St. Nicholas Park
  • The King Model Houses (aka “Striver’s Row”)
  • Abyssinian Baptist Church
  • AME Zion Church
  • Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture
  • Harlem YMCA
  • St. Philip’s Church
  • Apollo Theater
  • In addition, the tour features a number of historical illustrations that help trace the development of the neighborhood.
