About Our Tours

All tours are led by Michelle or James Nevius and feature a mix of stops that highlight the history, architecture, and cultural development of the neighborhood. We are both historians who believe that the best way to experience New York City is up close and on foot.

image004The Best of
Lower Manhattan

To tour Lower Manhattan (a/k/a The Financial District) is to explore New York from its earliest European influences to its current role as financial capital of the world. This tour makes a wonderful introduction to New York City; planned stops include*:

  • Battery Park (from which we see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island)
  • The Alexander Hamilton Custom House (now the National Museum of the American Indian)
  • Bowling Green Park
  • Castle Clinton, a fort from the War of 1812
  • The Shrine to Saint Elizabeth Anne Seton
  • Fraunces Tavern
  • The site of the Dutch Stadt Huis and the archaeological remains of early Manhattan
  • The city's first paved street
  • Delmonico's
  • Wall Street
  • Federal Hall National Monument, where George Washington was inaugurated
  • Morgan's Bank
  • The New York Stock Exchange
  • Trinity Church and graveyard
  • The World Trade Center site (optional—we will go there for those who are interested, but will avoid the site for those who’d prefer not to see it.)
  • In addition, the tour is supplemented with historic drawings from the 17th century onward, showing what life was like in Dutch New Amsterdam, Colonial New York, and in the post-Revolutionary period when New York was (briefly) the capital of the United States. More recent photographs illustrate the architectural development of the skyscraper and the growth of Wall Street.

Touring New Amsterdam and
Colonial New York

If your interest is primarily in the Dutch Colonial period, the American Revolution, the Early Federal Period—or any time in between—please note that this tour can be customized to focus on the city’s origins. To book a “Colonial New York” tour, send email to walknyc@gmail.com and just let us know. This tour is great for student groups studying the period or anyone who wants to know more about the founding of the city—and the founding of America.
