Exploring Morningside Heights

image004A little over a century ago, the heights that rise above 110th Street on the West Side were home to little more than a orphanage and an insane asylum. Within a few decades, the neighborhood was transformed, with some of New York's oldest and most influential institutions taking residence. Planned stops on this tour include:*

  • Three parks created by the celebrated team of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux: Central Park, Morningside Park, and Riverside Park
  • The Leake and Watts orphanage
  • The largest gothic church in the world, The Cathedral of St. John the Divine
  • St. Luke's Hospital
  • Columbia University (with the remains of the Bloomingdale Insane Asylum)
  • Jewish Theological Seminary
  • The site of the Revolutionary War Battle of Harlem Heights
  • Riverside Church
  • Grant's Tomb
  • In addition, the tour features a number of historic photographs that help trace its development from farmland to thriving community.

* all walking tour itineraries are subject to change

“Add an Hour”
For an additional $10 per person (or a flat fee of $120 for groups of 1-3 people), you can add an hour to the length of your tour and spend some time exploring the neighborhood that borders Morningside Heights, Riverside Park.
