About Our Tours

All tours are led by Michelle or James Nevius and feature a mix of stops that highlight the history, architecture, and cultural development of the neighborhood. We are both historians who believe that the best way to experience New York City is up close and on foot.

Discovering Riverside Park

image003Every New Yorker knows Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux's monumental Central Park; this tour takes a leisurely stroll through another of their great achievements, Riverside Park, which hugs the coast of Manhattan north of 72nd Street. Planned stops include*:

  • The monument to Eleanor Roosevelt
  • The Hudson River piers (both old and brand-new)
  • The 79th Street Boat Basin
  • The Soldiers and Sailors Monument
  • The "You've Got Mail" flower garden
  • The Joan of Arc Monument
  • Riverside Drive
  • The Firefighter's Memorial
  • Wildlife sanctuary
  • Riverside Church
  • Grant's Tomb

  • PLEASE NOTE: If your primary interest in this tour is in seeing Grant’s Tomb, please visit our Morningside Heights tour page, as this is the better option.

  • In addition, the tour is supplemented with vintage 19th-century drawings and photographs that illustrate the changing nature of park and the neighborhood.

The tour covers about three miles in approximately two hours; the tour is suitable for anyone, but appeals mostly to New Yorkers, or to those who'd like a tour with more scenery than history.

If your main goal in taking this tour is seeing Grant’s Tomb (pictured above), you are encouraged to take our tour of Morningside HeightsCLICK HERE for more information. (The Riverside Park tour doesn’t always make it as far north as the tomb!)

Also, please note that this tour is only given in certain seasons and may not be appropriate for all groups.

“Add an Hour”
For an additional $10 per person (or a flat fee of $120 for groups of 1-3 people), you can add an hour to the length of your tour and spend some time exploring one of the neighborhoods that borders Riverside Park, Morningside Heights or The Upper West Side.

For more information, please visit our Add an Hour page by CLICKING HERE; to book this tour, click on one of the following email links:

1) Riverside Park + Morningside Heights

2) Riverside Park + The Upper West Side

(Please note that you may only add one additional neighborhood to the tour.)
