Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts

The Upper West Side is a neighborhood not often on a tourist's itinerary, but it is one full of architectural and historical treasures.

Even as much of the rest of the city was rapidly developing, the area between Central Park and the Hudson River remained bucolic and rural. When development finally did arrive, it came in the form of grand apartment buildings such as the Dakota (where John Lennon lived), which opened in 1884.

The area was revitalized in the 1960s by the building of Lincoln Center--but at what cost? This tour looks at how the fortunes of the Upper West Side have ebbed and flowed over the decades.
